Australian Antique Coin Auctioned - Sold at $425,000

A rare piece of the first currency in Australia, the Holey dollar, was just sold in a special auction for $425,000. The Holey Dollar was the first ever currency in Australia, in the colony of New South Wales. In 1812, Governor Lachlan Macquarie imported 40,000 Silver Dollars from spain and then had the center cut out of each, with the intention to double the number of the coins. This because of a coin shortage that was afecting the colony. The 1813 Holey Dollar was the first Australian coin, and the center of the coins was called a Dump. Now, in a Coinworks Eminent Colonials Auction, the coin was sold for $425,ooo Dollars, a record for a coin of its type.
