$39.32 Million Dollars for Pink Diamond

A rare, pink, 34.65 carat diamond was recently auctioned at Christie’s at $39.32 million U.S. Dollars, making the most expensive diamond auction made by the iconic auction house.   The diamond was part of the Nizam of Hyderabad’s collection, originally believed to be from mines in South India and is categorized as a cushion cut stone. It is considered to be one of the world’s largest pink diamonds.   The rock has quite a notable history. It is believed it was found at the Golconda mines in India and sold by the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1960. It was then bought by Van Cleef & Arpels in London at a price of $70,158, and a celebration was held because of this purchase at the Van Cleef & Arpels store in beautiful Paris. The guests included Sayajirao Gaekwad, Prince of Baroda, at the time just 14 years-old. The pink diamond was baptized as “Princie” in honor of young royal.   The highest bid for a diamond was placed three years ago at Sotheby’s, making it $46 million for “The Graffe Pink Diamond.”
